I wouldn't bother reading the new one -- it's just more of the same. The first one in the series seemed quite original, but it hasn't moved on. Dumarest's better.
funny - it's the sheer size of the dramatis personae that defeats me...
i find it impossible to keep all the smiths & smythes and joneses straight & separate from each other: somehow, they seem to lack recognisably distinct characters...
Yes, I have the same problem - and my taste is normally quite vanilla but sometimes I do wish that there was a little more action. Don't you find that that there is also a lack of narrative flow?
I don't really like the writer's style. I know they are classics, but - do you think they might work better if they were adapted for TV?
