When I was in Germany, I tried to explain to a friend that chutney was kind of a cross between jam and pickle. So, being an inveterate jam-maker who was acquainted with pickle, she tried to reproduce chutney, without ever having tasted any, or seen a recipe. We ended up with something that was ...interesting... neither pickle, nor chutney. We called in Putney, drew red buses on the labels, and claimed it was an old London speciality. The Germans ate it.
